AUTISM ASSISTANT 

Fairmount Learning Center

7 hours per day, 191 days per year

Step 1 - Hourly Rate $23.85

 

Required

  1. 2 or 4 year degree preferably in an educational, medical, psychological area of study.
  2. Appropriate Ohio Department of Education permit/licensure required.
  3. Work effectively with a classroom teacher, staff, and families.
  4. Organizational skills.
  5. Willing and able to successfully complete training in autism methodologies.
  6. Willing and able to successfully complete and utilize district endorsed restraint and seclusion training.
  7. Willing and able to perform what sometimes can be physically demanding job duties.
  8. Willing and able to understand and accept that exhibited behaviors are associated with a disability and not a matter of choice.
  9. Willing and able to work in a team environment with the teacher and related service providers.

 

Desirable:

  1.  Experience with environmental supports and modifications that will ensure structure, predictability and routine.
  2. Experience with visual supports to maintain attention, aid and stability, improve language comprehension and processing, and assist in prompting and aiding in independence.
  3. Experience with appropriate sensory supports to enable the student to have improved processing of information and/or their environment.
  4. Experience with communication support to meet the diverse needs of students emphasizing communicative intent and expression of thoughts and ideas effectively. 
  5. Experience with behavior supports that ensure appropriate understanding of behaviors as they relate to the intentions of the student with autism.
  6. Knowledge in treatments and methodologies for educating children with Autism.

 

Responsibilities:

The responsibilities of an Autism Spectrum Classroom Assistant include, but are not limited to, the following:

  

  1. Work with students with autism
  2. Attend trainings
  3. Maintain confidentiality
  4. Maintain a safe environment utilizing district approved protocols related to positive behavior supports and safety restraint techniques
  5. Assist with wash up, lunch, and toilet routines and the general care of students
  6. Lift students if needed
  7. Change diapers if needed
  8. Maintain records and clerical duties as assigned by the certified teacher
  9. Assist in supervision of students at all times including but not limited to emergency drills, assemblies, recess, and field trips
  10. Assist in the care, maintenance and ordering of classroom equipment and materials
  11. Help students master equipment used in the classroom for instruction and other purposes
  12. Use communication strategies and/or program/tools for non-verbal students
  13. Administer, score and record achievement and diagnostic tests as the teacher recommends for students
  14. Reinforce learning of material or skills
  15. Utilize sensory techniques for calming and/or assist with sensory breaks
  16. Participate in the IEP and ETR process as appropriate and needed
  17. Assist with students in inclusion settings
  18. Alert the teacher to any problems or special information about an individual student
  19. Serve as chief source of information and help to any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regular teacher.
  20. Use of 21st Century technology skills (email, iPad, and Microsoft Office)
  21. Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal

Applicants ALL for the above positions are REQUIRED to be Highly Qualified, which is defined as: Two (2) years of college (Minimum of 48 Semester Hours, or 72 Quarter Hours), or possess an Associate’s Degree, or passed the Praxis Paraprofessional Assessment Exam.

 

Applicants must submit a copy of their Praxis Paraprofessional Assessment Exam results, or a copy of their college transcript(s) to verify their Highly Qualified Status. Applicants must also have a valid Educational Aide Permit, or obtain one immediately upon being employed with the Canton City School District. If you do not meet the criteria for Highly Qualified, you are not eligible to apply.
